October is a great month for birdwatching in New York City! Fall migration brings waves of colorful migrating birds, and the fall colors deepen with every passing week.
This page includes ongoing sightings of common and migratory birds for October 2026.
Birds expected this month in Inwood include kinglets, Carolina Wrens, Hermit Thrushes, migrating warblers, White-throated Sparrows, and Dark-eyed Juncos.
Park regulars such as Northern Cardinals, American Robins, Blue Jays, and woodpeckers should be present. Raptor activity should increase. The Great Blue Herons will likely continue at the Salt Marsh.
By the end of the month, look for wintering birds such as Tufted Titmouse and Black-capped Chickadees.
