A Flurry of Fall Migrants in Inwood Hill Park

Fall bird migration was in full force in Inwood Hill Park this morning. I saw a dazzling flurry of warblers, kinglets, vireos, and other birds on my morning walk. There were hundreds of birds.

The location was the northern hillside trail that leads from the athletic fields to the Henry Hudson Bridge. The trail, as well as all the park, is bursting with autumn colors. The time was between 8:15 am and 10:15 am.

Fall migration has been slight of late, and a little disappointing. Not this morning. Weather conditions were right for an overnight migration, and tonight looks equally promising. I can’t guarantee birds but I highly recommend a morning walk tomorrow in the same location. Start at Shorakapok Rock and take the trail on the right that winds up the hillside.

As always, warblers are notoriously hard to see clearly as they fly around so fast. I did my best to capture some of them.

In addition to fall migrants, look for woodpeckers as they favor the big trees of the old-growth forest here.

As autumn matures, we’ll see more birds that thrive in the forest during winter. Many will stay. I have seen several Dark-eyed Juncos recently, and I saw many more this morning.
