UPDATE February 24, 2024. Sad news comes that Flaco the Eurasian Eagle-Owl has died. On the evening of February 23, 2024, he apparently collided with a building on West 89th Street in the Upper West Side. According to reports, building residents discovered his body on the ground and were able to transport him to the Wild Bird Fund where he was declared dead. His body was taken to the Bronx Zoo for investigation into the cause of death. See The Guardian for the story. I have added new pictures to this original post to pay homage for his beauty. He was one of the most regal creatures I had ever seen.
February 2, 2024 marked the one year anniversary of Flaco the Eurasian Eagle-Owl’s escape from the Central Park Zoo. On February 15, 2023, I traveled to Central Park to visit Flaco two weeks into his adventure.

On the day I visited, Flaco was perched on a low branch near the Naumburg Bandshell just south of the 72nd Street Traverse. This proximity allowed good views.
