A visual journal exploring the birds of Inwood and Northern Manhattan by Teri Tynes

Sightings Fall 2025 – September 2025

Regular sightings for the month. September features many of the continuing marsh birds such as the Great Egret, Black-crowned Night Herons, and the Great Blue Heron.

With the beginning of raptor season, the activity in the skies will likely include Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Red-tailed Hawks, Turkey Vultures, and other hawks.

Common Yellowthroat near the Salt Marsh. September 30, 2025. 3:29 p.m.

Cover: Osprey. September 1, 2025. 3:47 p.m. The Osprey in the Osprey tree is a Labor Day weekend tradition.

September also sees many fall migrants, including juveniles, to Inwood. Many are noted below. Fall migratory birds wear different plumage, so identification can be tricky. I’ve already made corrections for a couple of migrant warblers.

Birds on the first full day of Autumn – September 23, 2025

High migration observed on September 8, 2025. At around 7:20 a.m. I encountered a flurry of migratory warblers and others near the “Parapet” wall and trail high in the park.
