Sightings Spring 2024 – April 2024

Regular sightings for the month of April 2024. The location is Inwood Hill Park unless otherwise noted.

April should bring in many new birds to the forest and marsh as the spring migration season ramps up to full speed.

In April 2023, Inwood saw a host of birds arrive, including Louisiana Waterthrush, Northern Rough-winded Swallow, Hermit Thrush (in 2024 observed on April 6), Palm Warbler, many Yellow-rumped Warblers, Eastern Phoebes (already seen in March 2024), and even a Pileated Woodpecker. Northern Flickers have already started to arrive.

April of 2024 began with an enormous surprise – an Osprey on one of the football stadium’s light towers. Last year, Ospreys suddenly arrived around Memorial Day weekend, and even that early date took locals by surprise. Read the new post on the April Fools’ Day Osprey.

On April 7, 2024, a Fox Sparrow was observed up on the ridge near the White Pines. Cedar Waxwings appeared on the trail above the dog run on April 13, 2024. A Palm Warbler was seen on the eastern hill on April 15, 2024. Ruby-crowned Kinglets have been numerous this month. A flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers was sighted on the morning of April 17, 2024 on the far west trail near the Straus Mansion site. An Indigo Bunting was seen and reported by others around April 20-22 but I missed it.

Multiple Baltimore Orioles were observed in Inwood Hill Park on the morning of April 26, 2024.

The night of April 28, 2024 was a high migration night for New York County, bringing multiple migratory birds to the area. See slideshow below. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has issued a Migration Alert for the evening of April 29, 2024. When these alerts are issued, be sure to turn off lights that are not necessary so that the birds do not collide with windows. Consult Cornell’s Migration Dashboard at https://dashboard.birdcast.info/ for local information.

Eclipse Day in Inwood Hill Park April 8, 2024

Many people gathered in Inwood Hill Park on the afternoon of April 8, 2024 to view the partial solar eclipse. Urban Park Rangers set up a solar telescope and handed out eclipse glasses for safe viewing of the rare celestial event. I didn’t observe any particularly unusual bird behavior during the eclipse, but it was rare to see so many people on the lawn for a Monday afternoon. The photo was taken at 3:25 p.m., close to the peak.
