Sightings Fall 2024 – November 2024

Everyday sightings for the month of November 2024.

As of early November, many of the winter birds have returned including Tufted Titmice, Black-capped Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, White-breasted Nuthatches, and White-throated Sparrows. Look for the recent blog series on some of these winter birds.

Red-tailed Hawks, an American Kestrel, and a Merlin have been observed. Look for the Belted Kingfisher and Great Blue Herons at the marsh. Woodpeckers are abundant at this time of year.

Thanksgiving Week – November 24-30, 2024

Updates on Fire Conditions in Park

  • Burn ban in effect through November 30, 2024.
  • NYC issued a Drought Warning on November 18, 2024.

On the morning of November 14, 2024, the FDNY had put out the two fires in Inwood Hill Park from the afternoon of November 13, 2024, though hot spots were still present. Park access may be limited.

Brush Fires in Park – November 13, 2024

On Wednesday, November 13, 2024, large brush fires broke out in Inwood Hill Park. I will provide updates on this situation as soon as possible.

Drought and Red Flag Warnings

In early November 2024, the tri-state area was suffering through a serious drought. Little rain and windy conditions enhanced fire weather conditions. Several fires broke out along the New Jersey Palisades and in NYC parks.
